Silent Observers for the General Assembly 2024

Being a silent observer at the General Assembly in Ängsbacka from the 17th -19th of August offers a unique opportunity to gain first hand insights into the European Ecovillage Network’s discussions and initiatives. As one of our limited spots for observers, you’ll have the chance to learn about diverse perspectives, network with like-minded individuals, and access valuable information about GEN EU’s activities.
Your presence as an observer not only contributes to the inclusive atmosphere of the event but also opens doors to potential deeper engagement within the ecovillage community.

Code of Conduct

Before applying, we kindly request that you to review our Code of Conduct for Silent Observers below. This outlines the guidelines and standards that we uphold to ensure a respectful and productive environment and clarifies your participation and engagement opportunities during the General Assembly.

  • Membership Invitation: Silent observers are very much encouraged to become an individual member of the European Ecovillage Network (GEN), in case they do not also attend the Gathering through which they are already automatically enrolled in the Membership Programme. Their interest in observing the GA demonstrates a commitment to the values and goals of GEN, and them becoming members would further contribute to the network’s mission.
  • Preparation Encouragement: Silent observers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the European Ecovillage Network (GEN EU) prior to attending the General Assembly via reading the information provided on GEN Europe’s website.
  • Document Review: Observers are invited to review the provided documents attentively, including agendas, reports, and any other materials related to the GA. This preparation will enable observers to follow discussions more effectively and engage meaningfully with participants during informal interactions.
  • Contact Person: Should Silent Observers have any questions prior to the GA or express the desire to engage more with GEN Europe, we assure them of our support and assistance. The membership manager and a designated person from the Council, will serve as their contact persons to address any questions, provide guidance, and facilitate their integration into the GEN community.
  • Partial Participation Option: While silent observers are primarily designated to observe without active participation during the official part of the General Assembly, they are welcome to engage in certain aspects of the event. During designated breaks or informal networking sessions, observers may interact with participants, share experiences, and contribute to discussions in a non-official capacity.
  • Limitations on Proposal and Discussion Suggestions: Observers understand that while they may engage in discussions during informal settings, they are not permitted to suggest discussion points or proposals for consideration during the official part of the General Assembly. This limitation ensures that the decision-making process remains within the official designated membership while still allowing observers to engage with the community in a meaningful way.
  • Confidentiality: Observers shall respect the confidentiality of the discussions and documents provided prior to the General Assembly. They shall not disclose any sensitive information or discussions to external parties without explicit consent.
  • Non-Interference: Silent observers shall refrain from interfering with the proceedings of the GA in any manner, including but not limited to interrupting speakers, attempting to influence decisions, or engaging in side conversations that may distract participants.
  • Compliance with Rules: Observers shall adhere to any rules or guidelines set forth by the organizers of the GA. They shall follow any instructions provided by the facilitator or designated staff members.
  • Feedback: Observers are encouraged to provide constructive feedback to the organizers after the GA session, including any suggestions for improvement or areas where the code of conduct could be strengthened.
