Active Hope: Green Tech Innovations Powering Resilience in Ukrainian Ecovillages

In a recent interview with Maksym Zalevski from GEN Ukraine we delved into the inspiring resilience of Ukrainian eco-villages amidst ongoing challenges. Maksym shared how their network of around 55 locations, documented in their Green Tech catalogue, is adapting to climate change and the impacts of war through innovative, low-tech solutions.
From Crisis to Innovation
In Ukraine, the focus is on practical, accessible solutions, especially in rural areas. Maksym emphasized that their ecovillages differ from most of those in Europe, as they are often situated in extremely rural territories, focusing on restoring old clay houses and building new homes on degraded land.

Green Tech in Action
Maksym detailed several key green tech initiatives showcased in the Green Tech Catalogue:
- Greenhouses:
- To address food security for refugees, they distributed around 35 greenhouses, enabling people to grow their own food.
- These greenhouses are still in use, providing a vital source of sustenance.
- Water Management:
- The communities cleaned and installed pumps in various water sources to ensure access to clean water.
- They are also developing rainwater harvesting systems, including lakes for water storage.
- Energy Solutions:
- GEN Ukraine is partnering with European organizations to install small solar power stations (2-3 kilowatts) in their villages.
- The communities are also using smaller power stations (60-600 watts) to maintain connectivity.
- Mobility:
- Through partnerships with Denmark and the Netherlands, the communities received bicycles, which they repaired and upgraded with electric batteries.
- These electric bicycles provide essential mobility for women, reducing the burden of long-distance travel.
- Land Regeneration:
- The communities are working with a regenerative foundation and Swedish University to test and repair soil after bombing.
- The communities are also repairing bombed forests, and working on protected natural areas.

Bombing and destruction of infrastructure have led to significant environmental damage, including forest fires and water contamination. Despite these challenges, the ecovillages are actively involved in reforestation and river cleanup efforts. While the government’s focus is primarily on survival during the war, the ecovillages are finding ways to collaborate on land protection and regeneration projects. GEN Ukraine keeps on establishing NGOs to advocate for environmental protection and working on projects that unite communities.
Ukrainian ecovillages continue demonstrating remarkable resilience during wartime by combining practical sustainability efforts with community healing initiatives. They’re implementing green technologies, conducting trauma-informed community building workshops, and maintaining crucial connections with volunteers from across Europe who provide vital energy and hope.
The unwavering dedication of GEN Ukraine to both community care and environmental stewardship in the face of such extreme adversity offers profound lessons about resilience and purpose. Let them inspire us all while reminding us to approach our own challenges with humility and gratitude.
