Green Phoenix Conference Recap – A Gathering of Heart, Balance, and Vision in the Swiss Alps
From October 27 to 31, the Green Phoenix Conference took place high in the Swiss mountains, hosted by our member ecovillage, Zentrum der Einheit Schweibenalp. Known as GEN’s “think and feel tank,” Green Phoenix is an annual event with a spiritual focus, bringing together people living in community to share experiences and support one another in their journeys.
This year’s theme was “Balance,” explored across three interconnected levels: the individual, the community, and the broader world. In a significant step forward, young voices within the movement were explicitly encouraged and financially supported to participate, marking the first time a dedicated “NextGreenPhoenix” group contributed their unique perspectives. Throughout the conference, these younger participants collaborated closely with established community members, while also having opportunities for separate reflection and exchange.
The first day centered on individual balance, where participants used the practice of deep listening to share their personal strategies for finding equilibrium in their lives. On day two, the focus shifted to the heart of Green Phoenix itself, with a fishbowl session initiated by the NextGreenPhoenix group. Here, long-time organizers and participants delved into their personal motivations and the event’s enduring significance. This session illuminated Green Phoenix’s evolution, from its humble beginnings to its current form, and the enduring “why” that fuels its gatherings: a sacred space for vulnerability, genuine connection, and a collective love for the world, underpinned by a commitment to the evolution of human consciousness. As with the mythical Phoenix, the Green Phoenix has continually reinvented itself, adapting to new contexts while staying true to its core purpose.
The third day widened the lens to balance in the broader world. Moving presentations highlighted international projects from Ukraine, Senegal, Myanmar, and Peru, leaving participants deeply moved by the resilience and dedication of those working in challenging, sometimes unimaginable, conditions. These powerful stories of hope and determination ignited a shared commitment to further support these initiatives, sparking the creation of new project groups for financial and practical assistance. In addition, Johannes, our new GEN Europe council member, presented plans for a “GEN Fund,” a promising step toward supporting emerging initiatives and fostering more equitable collaboration between the Global North and South.
In closing, the Green Phoenix Conference once again inspired fresh collaborations, deepened connections, and kindled project ideas that will undoubtedly shape the future. Above all, it provided a nourishing space where community bonds grew stronger, friendships deepened, and participants left with hearts full and spirits uplifted.
