Our eighth Journey: Find out more about GEN regions and the National Networks

The original purpose of GEN Europe was to connect communities to one another: to share experiences, ideas and stories among a group of peers who would understand what it meant to live, work, play, love, solve conflict, cook, and build in community. Almost three decades on, we stay true to our origins, and continue to offer our members spaces to network and create together.

Our members organise exchanges between their ecovillages, offer solidarity in times of need, share skills, and build lifelong friendships through their participation in GEN Europe. Networking is at the heart of what we do – and your community is invited to be part of it.

GEN Europe connects on different levels with the world – on international level and on national or transnational. Check out here what we do, and how you can come into the picture!

GEN regions globally

The Global Ecovillage Network is made up of five regional networks: GEN Africa, GEN Europe, CASA (Latin America), GENNA (North America), and GENOA (Oceania & Asia). GEN also includes NextGEN, its youth branch, which works to empower, educate, connect, and inspire young people to actively participate in the ecovillage movement and contribute to community-led eco-social regeneration.

GEN Europe’s National and Transnational Networks

GEN Europe is made up of ecovillages, and networks of ecovillages. These ecovillage networks play a vital role in bringing together ecovillagers and other regenerative actors together on a national or regional level, advocating for community-led initiatives within a country or region, and running events and gatherings for those who share a language, cultural or geographic affinity.

Why National Networks Matter

While GEN Europe provides a platform for broader coordination and visibility, National Networks are where the magic of connection meets everyday reality. These networks are better placed to support ecovillages with:

  • Local policy and advocacy
  • Language-specific support
  • Cultural understanding
  • Practical collaborations and local gatherings

Also for individuals who are not yet places in ecovillages, but would like to get close to the ecovillage movement, we highly recommend to get in touch with your National Network! This is often how people connect also with their future community, and/or with GEN Europe. National Networks are always happy about support & new members!

How to get involved with your National Network?

The ecovillage movement is no longer a scattered mosaic of isolated experiments. It is a growing, interlinked ecosystem of people and places who understand that regeneration begins in community—and grows through connection. From Italy to Ukraine, from Germany to the Netherlands, from regional projects like SEEN to umbrella structures like GEN Europe, one thing is clear: together, we are stronger.

Through one of our past Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships “Launch & Thrive”, we were able to develop different ressources for you & the world to learn about our National Networks! Check out Networks like the Danish Ecovillage Network, GEN Germany or GEN Ukraine on the Launch&Thrive Peertube.
