Our vision for the future of food: from what is to what if – Part 2

Imagine it’s 2035 and we’ve won. What would our food systems look like? How can we break free from the limits set by the current situation so that we can imagine the future we truly want?

As the European Commission prepares to present its Vision for the Future of Agriculture and Food in late February, ECOLISE invites you to a visioning exercise to widen the scope of what is possible, by designing a future for food systems that is just and sustainable.

Many people, politicians included, seem caught up in a crisis of imagination, believing that “there is no alternative” to the current European way of life and the socio-economic systems framing it. The challenge is to be creative and imagine what a good life within planetary boundaries could look like. Community-led initiatives across Europe already provide practical examples and inspiration of what can be achieved.

This visioning exercise will shape the key themes for our policy positioning process on food systems. Our goal: showcase the day-to-day solutions developed by community-led initiatives and inspire innovative policies for transformative food systems.

Policy positioning on just and sustainable food systems

ECOLISE is leading a policy positioning process as part of the EU-funded project Communities for Local Green Deals (COM4LGD). This initiative focuses on just and sustainable food systems from a grassroots perspective. Our goal is to amplify the grassroots voice in shaping EU policies on food systems.

This process will result in:

  • A policy position endorsed by partners and members, outlining barriers, opportunities, and policy recommendations for the food transition.
  • A collection of stories from food initiatives, outlining best practices and their positive impact on health, the environment and society
  • Dialogues with policymakers to promote the stories from food initiatives and policy recommendations
